Zooey Deschanel is the lead singer of the popular band She & Him, but more importantly, she is a hit indie actress who has evolved into an 'indie sex icon' after she married Ben Gibbard, just to sort of steal some press from him. Wonder if she sorta regrets that as a 'long term' gimmick now that DeathCabs aren't really that relevant any more.

Anyways, ZoZo is 'suing the fuck' out of shoemaker Steve Madden for $2 million because Steve Madden apparently 'promised her a shoe line' but it 'didn't come thru':

According to the lawsuit, in August 2010 Deschanel’s agent at CAA and Steve Madden made a binding, oral agreement stating that the starlet would be paid $2 million by the company to front a line of shoes, tentatively called “Zooey’s Shoes and Accessories.” She was told that she would be paid regardless of whether or not the items were actually produced, and that the payment would cover 13 days of work, including a photo shoot for an ad as well as press appearances.

A few weeks later, Steve Madden came back to the Deschanel camp, complaining that one retailer in particular was not keen on the collaboration, which meant they’d have to reduce the fee to $1.5 million. Deschanel’s agent agreed to the new fee. During this time, the actress refrained from entering into any similar contracts, as that was part of the oral agreement.

First of all, I'm not sure why she would want to work with Steve Madden. From what I understand, Steve Madden is the official brand of 'cool dad' business casual sporty shoes. I guess maybe this is the vibe that Zooey would go 4, since cool dads probably think she is 'hot' / 'relevant.'

Wonder why she thinks she deserves $2 million for 'doing nothing.' She should have 'got up off her ass' and signed a deal with Payless shoes or something, but maybe she is not mainstream/poor-wave enough to appeal to Payless-wave markets.

under California State law, verbal contracts are binding. But it’s very difficult to prove. We’re guessing Madden will pay up, or at least settle, as to avoid more bad press.

I guess Zooey Deschanel just 'needs a payday' / is trying to 'get headlines' or something.
I wonder if her + Ben Gibbard sit at dinner every nite, and she is all like "Ughhhh! Steve Madden effed me ovr on my shoe line. I wanna be creative and get paid millions 4 it. I h8 my life."
And he is like "Will u shut up already? Why don't u just sue them? Ur s00 naggy."
