Christopher Weingarten is a bitter music journalist, who has garnered fame and success through his meme book deal project Hipster Puppies. There is apparently some conference every year, and he goes on a firebreathing rant abt how the indiesphere is totally effed up, and music blogs + websites are 'being fucking retarded' about anything pure in music.

Do u <3 this bro or h8 him?

Cliffnotes on his speech:

  • Goes on an anti- Hype Machine rant since the Hype Machine has become an inauthentic aggregator of mp3s that tries to act like it is 'pure' and 'in it for the right reasons'
  • Indie rock needs to die
  • Blogs / tweeters who 'want 2 be first' ruin quality writing + force low level memes
  • To try to differentiate, shitty blogs cover shitty bands in order to try to be 'first' to break them 'in case they get big.'
  • It doesn't matter what u write, as long as it is Search Engine Optimized. Just 'playing mad libs with google trends.'
  • It is impossible to 'stumble' upon good new music because websites are not progressive enough 2 present something new, rely on the same buzzbands over and over again.
  • Musicians can't just make music, they have to 'produce content / memes' in order to be covered.
  • Pitchfork + Blogs don't post negative commentary because they are afraid of pissing off record labels
  • Blog sites are 'in the hands' of record labels to get exclusive content

Does he bring up some 'legit' points? Is he 'blowing smoke out his ass'?

Are music blogs not giving equal rights to new buzzbands?
Who is in control of the indie internet?
Can record labels 'stiff arm' music blogs?
Do music blogs 'act likes pussies' and just say that every band is good?
Is music blogging less of an art, and more like 'dumping keywords into google'?
Is the Hype Machine a useful tool, or is it sort of becoming like Napster with overhyped indie + retarded remixes and mashups?
Are mashups the most beautiful creation that the internet + indie music yielded?

The bro seems angry in this meme version of the speech.

R u down with this bro?
Does he seem angry?
Is anything wrong with the blogosphere or should it just stay the way it is?
Does ur blog deserve 2 be more relevant?
